Equitable Cities is a U.S.-based urban planning, public policy, and research firm working at the intersection of transportation, health, and equity. We recenter the narrative of who moves, how people move, and where people move by conducting street-level research and collaborating with community partners and clients.
Equitable Cities has over 15 years of experience leading or collaborating with public agencies and non-profit groups on a number of plans, projects, programs and training on Complete Streets, equity and environmental justice, public outreach and engagement, Vision Zero, bike share, and bicycle and pedestrian master planning. We work directly with federal, state, regional, county, and municipal governments, for-profit and nonprofit organizations throughout North America. Our core services include:

What Clients Say
“Equitable Cities has allowed us to truly elevate the work that we do across the Commonwealth to create healthy, walkable, and connected communities. Not only have they worked with us to build a model collaborative learning experience through the Virginia Walkability Action Institute, but they have challenged staff and participants alike to think critically about complex issues such as inequity, injustice, and racism and how we can collectively resolve them through actionable and measurable steps. With Equitable Cities as a partner, we are effectively working to fulfill our mission of becoming the healthiest state in the nation.”
“Equitable Cities is a true thought leader on creating equitable cities. He can unpack complex urban challenges through a combination of beautiful storytelling and academic research. Charles has been speaking on the intersection of race and identity on creating streets for people for more than a decade. If you are involved in active transportation policy, planning, or advocacy and haven’t listened to one of his talks, do so now! His contribution to our 2020 Emerging City Champions Fellowship demonstrated his unique ability to connect deeply with his audience even through a virtual format.”
“Charles Brown is a phenomenal speaker who artfully presents compelling and thought-provoking content. Charles knocked it out of the park. He captivated our audience with clearly distilled facts related to the complex issues of systemic racism in transportation planning and implementation. His keynote was the most well-attended event we’ve hosted so far. In a post-event survey, we found that over 80 percent of attendees felt he was engaging and articulate, and 85 percent said they learned something meaningful from him. It’s not hard to see why he is a nationally acclaimed and highly sought-after subject-matter expert. We’ll definitely be having him back.”
